Configuring Thunderbird

New pop account on vmail01.peak.org

To configure Thunderbird for a new POP account on vmail01.peak.org, start by going into Tools/Account Settings:


In the Account Settings window that pops up, click on "Outgoing Server" in the left pane, then "Add..." in the right:


This will bring up the Outgoing Server Settings window:

Important settings in the SMTP Server window that will pop up:

Server Name
This should be set to vmail01.peak.org unless otherwise directed by Peak Support.

Port
Identifies the outgoing mail service; it must be 587. Port 25 is the default, but is restricted, only allowing access from spam filter systems so that spammers can't bypass them.

Use name and password
This must be checked, and the User Name set to your actual mailbox email address. Note that this may not be the email address you actually use, in particular, if you have a private domain address forwarded to one of the Peak owned domains. If you're not sure, our support people can clarify the situation for you.

Use secure connection
This must be set to "TLS": it makes sure your password is protected when your mail program logs in to send mail, and is required by vmail01. TLS uses a different way of starting SSL than the SSL setting does; the latter won't work with this server.


Click OK in the SMTP server window, to get back to the Account Settings window, then click on "Add Account" under the left box:


The Account Wizard will start, defaulting to "Email account" as the type of account to add, just click Next:


In the Identity section, enter your real name, as you want it to appear in your email messages, and your email address, then click Next:


In the Server Information section, select POP as the type of server, set both incoming and outgoing mail servers to vmail01.peak.org; it is recommended that you uncheck "Use Global Inbox" also, though if you only have one mail account, it doesn't much matter. If you have more than one though, leaving this checked causes all the messages to get merged together, making it harder to manage them. When done here, click Next:


In the User Names section, it will default to just the username part of your email address --- you will need to add in the domain to make the full email address of your mailbox. Note that this may not be the email address you actually use, particularly if you have a private domain address forwarded to one of the Peak owned domains. If you're not sure, our support people can clarify the situation for you.

Finally, click Next to continue:


The Account Name is just a label so you can tell one account from the other (Thunderbird supports many simultaneous mail accounts); it is recommended to just leave it as your email address and click Next:


Congratulations! You're done. Well, not quite. Go ahead and click Finish:


Back at the Account Settings window now, click on Server Settings under your new account on the left. The various server settings options will appear on the right. You need to check the SSL button in the Security Settings box (this protects your password when you login to fetch mail), but do NOT check "Use secure authentication" --- that uses an additional protocol not implemented here, as SSL is sufficient to secure the connection.

You will also want to adjust the Server Settings to your taste, though we recommend checking all the boxes as shown. In particular, you don't want to check "Leave messages on server", as POP does not manage that case very well. If you need to do that for some reason, you should use IMAP for all accesses to your mailbox instead. When done, click OK and you're all set:
